Oriental Lilies

Oriental lilies typically have a combination of hot pink, white, and sometimes yellow colors on large lacy blossoms, but their claim to fame is their incredibly heady perfume! On a calm summer day the fragrance curls up around the back of your neck to your nostrils, gently lifting your nose as your eyes close and you drift off into euphoria! Go ahead, imagine it. Close your eyes and visualize being entranced by these beauties. My wife and I like to keep a patch or two of Orientals in the garden every year, and would probably go into withdrawal without them.

The primary drawback to Oriental lilies is that they are only hardy into Zone 5, barely into 4. Here in the Minneapolis Zone 4/5 Orientals only live for about 4, 5, or 6 years, gradually getting smaller with fewer blooms until finally they just disappear. I've never seen them naturalize up here in the cold climates, 1 bulb = 1 flower stalk, year after year until they give up.
Casa Blanca and Stargazer are probably the longest lived for cold climates.
