A. caudatus
Genus = Amaranthus
Species = A. caudatus
Origin = South America
A. caudatus is most typically known as the Love-Lies-Bleeding
plant that is used as a border plant in flower gardens. It can
reach heights between 4-5ft high, sometimes more. The seed-heads
are ropelike tassels in shades of bright pinks, with several on
a single plant often reaching to the ground, laying at the base
of the plant.
Although its primary use is as an ornamental annual, the leaves
and seeds, like others in the Amaranthus genus, are edible and
highly nutritious.
Care and Requirements.
Season Length
60 days, flowering often begins earlier.
Soil
This is a strong plant able to survive many different soil
conditions.
Water
Increased watering produces greens more delicate for table use.
Sowing
Sow directly in garden after last frost, 1/4"-1/2" deep.
Harvest
Harvest seed heads at or after the first frost, or shake
to determine if seeds are loose.
Dry seed heads until brittle, then remove stems by puttting
them in a bag and walking on them.
Remove chaff by crumbling them or screening them
in front of a fan. If you know of an easier way
to free the seeds from the chaff, please inform me
by e-mail so I can try it
out this fall and post it here for others to use.
