Ageratum houstonianum
Family = Asteraceae
Genus = Ageratum
Species = A. houstonianum
Origin = Mexico
Annual
Ageratum is a popular bedding plant, often used as edging in borders.
This low growing annual (up to 18in but usually shorter depending upon the variety)
likes full sun, hot weather and regular water. Ageratum blooms from spring through summer to
fall until the first frost. They have a compact form with pillowy flowerheads
held just above the plant giving the impression of miniature clouds in shades
of blue, pink, or white floating along the edge of the garden.
Propagation is almost exclusively by seed, which can be started indoors during
the spring frosts or seeded directly into the garden after the last frost.
Low growing branches that lay in contact with the soil may, however, try to
root, and these can be snipped off and transplanted to another area or into a
container to extend the season.
