Cabbage likes cool moist conditions, and have two planting times depending on the variety. The varieties should be planted in early spring as soon as possible after the last frost, or start them in a cold frame to extend the season. Late varieties should be planted in late spring or early summer so that the developing heads do not crack and split from the hot summer temperatures and moisture fluctuations. Early varieties should be harvested before the heat of summer. Later varieties can remain in the field until early winter or later if the temperatures are not too severe.
Cabbage often fall victim to the cabbage worm which attacks the stem and the base of the head. These worms can be controlled naturally by covering the plants with a fine mesh netting to keep the adult white diamond-back moths from laying eggs on the plants. Other diseases can be prevented by yearly crop rotation.
The tiny seeds of the cabbage are easily planted using
the Tiny Tim Seeder.
