..."Thought to have originated in the Eastern Mediterranean, cauliflower moved
through Italy and then on to England where it was first recorded in the 16th
century. Today hundreds of strains of the sturdy cole crop make it possible
to grow nearly year 'round"...
Early Cauliflower
..."Early cauliflower varieties are based on two different breeding lines.
The first is the alpha cauliflower varieties which were developed in Europe
for early growth. The alpha varieties such as Ravella do well in cool weather.
The second source for early maturity is the tropical genetics. These are
used in the warmer production areas and are generally considered more tolerant
of hot weather. Snow Crown is bred from tropical genetics. We elect to offer
many varieties because they permit an extended succession harvest from a single
early sowing date, sometimes lasting 5 weeks. However, be aware that the later
the sowing date, the more the varieties tend to mature simultaneously."...
Autumn Cauliflower
..."These varieties are bred to mature during the cooler period at summer's end
into autumn. If autumn types are sown too early, curd formation may suffer
from high heat. Use the hybrid types for May sowings."...
..."Heavy frosts that occur during curd formation can cause browning, so the
later varieties are bred to wrap and protect the head as much as possible."...
