"...Marginal aquatic or semi-aquatic
perennial with long, thin, segmented rhizomes, often reddish
purple stems, and ovate to ovate-lance-shaped, toothed, aromatic,
sometimes hairy, dark green leaves, to 2 1/2in (6cm) long,
occasionally to 3 1/2in (9cm). In summer, produces whorls of
tubular lilac flowers, to 1/4in (6mm) long, in dense, spherical,
terminal clusters. Height 6-36in (15-90cm), Spread 3ft (1m) or
more. Eurasia. Zones 6-9..."

"...There are several other wild mints worth noticing.
Horse-mint,
M. longifolia,
resembles peppermint in size and form, but the flowers are on
single, long terminal spikes, and the whole plant is generally
covered with a fine white hairs. Water-mint, M. aquatica,
has roundish leaves that are covered with a fine white down;
otherwise, it closely resembles the other mints in form, flavor,
and fragrance. Native mint, M. arvensis,
is the only mint that was originally native to the United
States..."
