Capsicum annuum (Peppers)
Genus = Capsicum
Species = C. annuum
Origin = Central and South America
C. annuum, the pepper, is the popular garden vegetable with
nearly as many varieties as people who grow them. They come in
many different shapes, sizes, colors, and flavors, from sweet bell
and pimento peppers to the fiery chiles. The common name `chile'
also includes some varieties from the species
C. frutescens (some Peruvian and Bolivian chiles) and
C. baccatum (the South American Habanero), but there is
a bit of confusion about the exact taxonomy, so forgive me if
this is in error.
Care and Requirements.
Transplanting
Start seedlings indoors 6-8 weeks prior to last frost. Transplant
outdoors after danger of frost, one foot apart from each other.
Soil
The sweet bell and pimento varieties require richly prepared
soils to increase the quality of fruit, while the chiles are much
more adabtable to a wider range of soil conditions.
Harvest
Harvesting can be done at many different points throughout the
fruit developement. They can be used prior to maturity as green fruit,
left on the plant to change color and ripen, and in the case of some
chiles, they can be left on the plant until they are dry and brittle.
As Potted Plants
Many of the smaller varieties are used as houseplants and as potted
patio plants. They require full sun and will set heavier fruit loads if
put outside during the summer months. They are not extremely fussy and
will grow in a standard potting mix or 1 part loamy soil, 1 part peat, and
1 part sand.
